Chapter 127 Wild Magic!
Chapter 127 Wild Magic!
I'm such a jinx!
Geb wanted to slap himself. He remembered when it all started, he spread a rumor: there was a bear in the cave, and then a bear actually came.
This time it was exactly the same. He boasted for ages about having a manticore—and then a manticore actually showed up!
As he rushed back to the edge of the canyon, Gebu quickly tried to figure out what had happened:
Judging from the situation, the beastmen were at a disadvantage in the battle against the manticores. Even if they weren't completely wiped out, they suffered heavy losses. Even the boarmen were dead.
No one would risk their life to set a trap. These guys didn't initially intend to use the manticores to attack Gebu's team; they still wanted to kill the manticores.
However, after the unexpected failure, the beastmen lacked the strength to fight against Gebu's forces, so they had to devise a temporary solution to force the monsters and knights into battle. These people aren't stupid! Their thought process is somewhat similar to Gebu's.
Now, Gebu's only option is to hurry back and rejoin the main force to kill the manticore. Without Gebu and the swordswoman, even if these guys manage to kill the manticore, they will suffer heavy losses and may not be a match for the remaining beastmen.
Most importantly, once the manticore dies, the knights will have no reason to continue following him—how will Dulin save him?
The four of them quickly ran back the way they came. The closer they got to the entrance of the canyon, the clearer the roars of the manticore became. The monster's howls were mixed with the screams and shouts of the humans.
Geb was the first to emerge from the canyon. The horrific scene before him instantly reminded him of the night with the Broken Tooth tribe, and the little goblin almost suffered a PTSD attack.
Human limbs were scattered on the ground, blood mixed with sand—a half-man (a person with only his upper body remaining) struggled to crawl toward Gebu, his entrails trailing behind him, leaving a bloodstain as wide as a human body.
"Help...help me..."
The man tried to crawl forward, but his protruding intestines got tangled in a spear stuck in the ground, like a ball of yarn, stretching longer and longer until his stomach was pulled out. He reached out his hands, making a final struggle, and then collapsed to the ground and died.
"Magnubier's ass..."
In just a few minutes, four or five of Matthew's fourteen men were killed, and the rest were putting up a desperate fight.
Four soldiers, armed with spears, grappled with the manticore. One of the soldiers thrust his spear at its rear end—the manticore's tail sprang up nimbly, vibrating and making a rustling sound. Its sharp stinger, like a sword, swung and knocked the soldier's spear away!
"what!"
The soldier couldn't dodge in time, and his wrist was slashed open with a gash several centimeters long. The moment it came into contact with air, the skin around the wound turned black instantly, and the venom spread visibly along the blood vessels!
Before the unfortunate fellow could even utter his last words, he collapsed to the ground, bleeding from all seven orifices, and never moved again.
The magpie knocked another soldier away with one claw. Just then, two fully armored knights rushed over from the side. With a wave of their hands, a net descended from the sky and caught the magpie's head and half of its body!
"Come and help!"
The remaining soldiers rushed forward and grabbed the edge of the net. The six men surrounded the manticore and held the net tightly. Trapped in the net, the manticore roared, twisted its body, and fought against the soldiers.
Geb immediately found a box and hid behind it—in order to prevent others from discovering that he was a magic user, Geb summoned the big-eyed raven and used it to cast spells.
"Gravis ut saxum!"
Gravity amplification!
Geb used a magic scroll directly; his own spell slots were more flexible and would be used later.
A strange ethereal energy distorted the space where the manticore was located, and the gravity in the local area suddenly increased. The monster and the net on its body instantly became three times the original weight. The manticore was crushed by its own weight and pressed to the ground, struggling like a worm.
The swordswoman and two knights joined the battle, rushing forward to help grab the net.
"Siege crossbow! Siege crossbow!"
Dove yelled at Matthew, who was standing next to him.
The sheriff and two soldiers were already positioned behind the siege crossbows. Due to the time constraints, the weapon wasn't fully set up yet—the two soldiers used their shoulders to support the crossbows, acting as human supports, while Matthew struggled to load the arrows, pull the lever to cock the crossbow, and aim.
"Move left...right! Right! Up a little!"
The crossbow's sights moved across the manticore's body, finally settling firmly on the beast's chest.
"Don't move! Jimmy, John, you two bastards, get out of the way!" Matthew yelled at the two soldiers in front of the mantis lion.
Just as the two soldiers moved away from their firing line, the red cracks on the manticore's body suddenly emitted a blinding light, and the entire beast seemed to be metal being heated to the point of melting in a furnace, radiating dazzling energy!
Geb suddenly sensed the flow of ether in the air being disrupted; some chaotic magical energy was destroying and reorganizing the magical rules of the area. The ether was stumbling around aimlessly like a headless fly!
The Gravity Amplification Technique has changed! Wait a minute! Gebu was shocked! He had never seen anything like this before. Whether in the meditation world, in reality, or even in the Aether plane, the Aether has its own laws of operation. How could it suddenly become chaos?!
What is that... what force is interfering with magic! A word flashed through Geb's mind—he had seen a description of such a phenomenon in the Book of Sand:
Wild magic!
The ether flow is completely chaotic, and in this situation, the wizard has no control over the effects of casting spells—anything can happen!
But why would a wild beast have such an ability?
The gravity around the manticore suddenly decreased rapidly, from being magnified three times to shrinking three times in an instant—as soon as it stood up, the net flew out, and the soldiers, unable to react in time, were instantly blown away. Those including the swordswoman were thrown aside, flying out of the gravity spell's range and crashing heavily to the ground.
"Well!"
The manticore's body became exceptionally light and agile. With a turn and a flick of its tail, which moved like a writhing rattlesnake, it pierced through the gaps in a knight's armor twice—he struggled for a moment, then died from the poison on the ground.
Geb knew he was in trouble. The magic here was completely disrupted, and casting any spell could backfire. He immediately canceled the gravity spell and pulled out his crossbow. This thing couldn't penetrate the manticore's tough hide, but Geb really couldn't think of any other weapon he could use.
In the short time it took to go back and forth, the manticore pounced on the soldiers who had fallen to the ground. They were so disoriented that they were powerless to resist. In just over ten seconds, a knight's squire and two soldiers were torn to pieces by the manticore's claws.
The manticore moved, and the siege crossbow had to be re-aimed, but the soldiers and Matthew couldn't keep up with its speed of movement—the manticore pounced and darted left and right like a cat, its huge body incredibly agile.
"Damn it! We have to hold it in place!" Matthew roared!
But only seven men remained on the field, and several of them had lost all will to fight. They rolled off the ground and fled toward the edge of the forest—exposing their backs to the manticore was a foolish decision. With a flap of its wings, it leaped several meters away, like an eagle catching a rabbit, taking one man with each claw. The soldiers were powerless to resist.
The woman with the sword got up from the ground, her eyes blazing with fury as she looked at the rampaging manticore. She turned and roared at Matthew.
Stop looking around! Aim at me!
The sheriff paused for a moment, then immediately realized what the female knight was about to do. He quickly pulled the crossbow back and aimed it at the direction of the swordswoman.
"Hey! You bastard! Your opponent is here!" the swordswoman roared at the manticore, but the beast didn't notice her. The female knight drew a javelin from behind her back—the metal tip was polished to a gleaming shine, gleaming coldly in the sunlight.
The woman stretched her slender body, gathered all her strength in the javelin behind her head, and then hurled it at the manticore!
Whoosh!
The javelin drew a smooth curve in the air. As if realizing something, the manticore was about to turn around when the javelin pierced straight into the red crevice on its abdomen!
"Awooo!!" The manticore let out a short howl, suddenly enraged by the pain, and turned to pounce on the swordswoman!
"Come on!!!" The swordswoman drew her javelin again, watching the manticore approach rapidly, without any intention of dodging!
"Crazy! Get out of the way, Dove!" Geb didn't care about hiding anymore and stood up anxiously, shouting!
The manticore leaped through the air, the siege crossbows twanged, and massive bolts pierced the air! Just as the manticore pounced on the swordswoman, she arched her body backward like an acrobat, allowing the manticore's claws to glide across her flat chest—
boom! ! !
The crossbow bolt pierced the Blackwing Rattlesnake's wing, leaving a huge bloody hole in the middle of its wing!
