Chapter 4 The Church and Secret Teachings
Chapter 4 The Church and Secret Teachings
Lucius, still bewildered, began writing in his diary:
[The Night's Watch's Secret, Proficiency +1%, Current 3%]
"Is this a dream?!" he blurted out, turning to look at Felix.
He nodded with great satisfaction, clapped his hands lightly, and said calmly:
"Mr. Lucius, congratulations on passing the initial test. I know you have many questions. When you wake up, come to the corridor to find us, and I will explain everything to you."
As soon as he finished speaking, Felix's figure gradually faded away and finally disappeared completely from Lucius's dream.
Lucius woke up from his dream again. There was just a glimmer of light outside the window. He fumbled for his pocket watch and glanced at it. It was only a little past 6 a.m.
He chuckled self-deprecatingly, "I didn't expect to witness the power of the authorities so soon."
Last night he was still thinking that the Kingdom of Horn must have an official agency to handle supernatural events, perhaps hidden very deep, or perhaps requiring some kind of code or cipher to access.
Unexpectedly, his opponent had already displayed his power directly in front of him, in a way that he was completely unable to resist.
Felix and his companions possessed dream powers far greater than he had as a beginner.
If they wanted to kill him in his dreams, he would probably die quietly, just like Ethan and Ava, without leaving a trace of struggle.
"What terrifying control." He assessed in his mind, then quickly got out of bed.
Lucius didn't linger for long. According to Felix's words in the dream, he had unintentionally passed some preliminary test, and at least for now, both sides were still willing to communicate.
As I turned the doorknob, the dim light in the hallway brightened a bit.
Felix and two other officers were standing at the end of the corridor, the three of them huddled together, talking in hushed tones.
Hearing the door open, they both turned to look at Lucius.
Lucius approached the three of them, looked at Felix, and asked warily, "Was it you who just invaded my dream?"
Felix didn't speak; the officer on his left, who maintained a smile throughout, answered the question for him:
"Actually, I did this. The captain is a Fiery One of the Unyielding Order and doesn't have the ability to enter dreams."
The Unyielding Order… Lucius pondered the word over and over.
This is the church with the widest faith and the most believers in the Kingdom of Horn, and they worship a goddess called "White Sun Forge".
In official propaganda, the White Forge is the goddess of destruction and creation, and every city in the Kingdom of Horn has at least one church dedicated to her.
For example, the Church of St. Audrey in Hull is dedicated to this goddess.
In fact, Lucius himself was a devout follower of the daytime forge, and the old bishop would always say something like this when distributing eggs:
"The flames of the forge in broad daylight illuminate you."
The students would mechanically reply, "May her furnace burn forever."
Felix removed his top hat, placed it on his chest, bowed slightly, and smiled:
"Let's get to know each other again, Felix Bennett, the Fiery One of the Unyielding Order."
"I am Oliver Scott, the Radiant One of the Invincible Sun Church," the smiling police officer continued, introducing himself.
"I hope you can understand the tests I put on you in the dream just now; it's standard procedure for us."
Then he pointed to another thin man who had remained silent:
"This is Miles Thompson, the ghoul from the Tower of White Doves."
Miles nodded to Lucius as a greeting.
"They're all extraordinary individuals, and from different churches?" Lucius exclaimed in surprise.
In his mind, there should be some competition between different religious groups.
The history books of my past life were filled with chapters on religious wars: Anglicans and Puritans, Sunnis and Shiites, Buddhism and Hinduism...
The blood that humanity has spilled over due to theological divisions could probably fill the entire Mediterranean Sea.
And here, the Kingdom of Horn actually managed to get superhumans from three different churches to form a small team and fight side by side?
The kingdom's political wisdom, or rather, its art of checks and balances, was far more sophisticated than he had imagined.
"We prefer to call ourselves Sequencers," Felix corrected, then got down to business:
"Mr. Lucius, I believe you have already read that secret book, and even gained a little bit of mystical power from it."
"Secret transmission?" Lucius quickly realized what the word referred to. "You mean the documents Professor Marcus gave me?"
"Yes." Felix nodded, clearly pleased that Lucius had grasped the core concept so quickly. He began to explain:
"Among the Sequencers, we collectively refer to those documents and books that contain hidden occult knowledge as secret teachings."
They may appear to be historical records, literary works, or philosophical writings, but unexpected changes can occur under certain circumstances.
The vast majority of these changes are fatal, and only in very rare cases will they directly endow the reader with some mystical power.
He glanced at Lucius and said enviously:
"You belong to the latter category. In our words, you are very talented, extremely talented."
He not only survived the contact with the secret transmission without any preparation or protective measures, but also achieved an initial awakening.
In the cases I know of, nine out of ten were carried out of the room lying down; the only one standing was you, standing right in front of us.
Lucius silently accepted this explanation, which effectively made sense of all the illogical things he had said.
"I did gain some mystical powers, and after waking up from a coma, I found myself able to remain conscious in my dreams," Lucius selectively revealed part of the truth.
"However..." He smiled, a self-deprecating tone in his voice:
"You found out in less than a day. I thought I was hiding it pretty well."
His words were flawless; after all, who could know that he was a time traveler and possessed such an incredible thing as a occult diary?
"That's a good thing!"
Oliver picked up where Lucius left off, his smile growing even brighter.
He turned to Felix, his eyes clearly gleaming with the light of "Captain, we've struck gold!" His lips moved as if he wanted to say something.
But Felix silenced him with a serious look.
Oliver immediately understood everything in that look:
Keep quiet, don't show excessive interest in front of outsiders, and don't let him realize his value too early.
Oliver closed his mouth, swallowed the unspoken suggestion, and put on his standard professional smile again.
"Mr. Lucius!" Felix's tone suddenly turned serious, and he took a half step to close the distance between them.
"Although you are talented, you are now in a very dangerous situation."
According to our investigation, Professor Marcus is not an ordinary university professor; he is secretly a cultist who worships an evil god.
"He gave you the documents because he wanted to use your body to create a material called 'Light in the Skull,' which is an important condition for a Radiant Being to advance."
