Chapter 39 Designer
Chapter 39 Designer
"Did you design this uniform?"
Inside the castle's drawing room, Vilan stared wide-eyed at the sketches provided by Veresa.
Vanesa sat in a chair to the side, a confident smile on her face. Even in front of the lord, she showed no nervousness whatsoever.
Behind her, Igris clenched her fists, seemingly worried that her best friend's design hadn't satisfied Vilan.
Clearly, she had worried too much; Vilan was not only satisfied but also pleasantly surprised.
Veresa designed two sets of uniforms. The first set was modified from the guards' leather armor, retaining the characteristics of the era. The leather armor was paired with a linen vest, and there was a wool coat on the outside. Although it was a bit bulky, it provided good warmth in winter.
It must be said that this is a standard soldier's uniform. If all of them were to be equipped with it, one would know at a glance that they are elite troops.
But what surprised Vilan was the second design.
Compared to the traditional aesthetic of the first outfit, the second outfit completely subverts the style of this era, looking more like a hunting outfit popular in the 19th century.
The upper body is a belted short jacket with diagonal buttons at the front, and the waist is specially narrowed and tightened with a belt.
The lower body consisted of riding breeches and leg guards, paired with leather boots. At first glance, it looked like a modern hunting outfit!
Of course, some details still reveal the indelible characteristics of the era, such as the pointed knight's hat, the folded design of the cuffs similar to knight's formal attire, and a cloak similar to that commonly worn by adventurers.
Even so, this was a standard military uniform that perfectly met Vilan's requirements!
He couldn't help but take another look at Veresa. She wasn't particularly beautiful, but her eyes held a composure and confidence rarely seen in the Anvil Territory.
Clearly, she is satisfied with and enjoys her designs.
Vilan couldn't help but wonder, "Who's the time traveler here, you or me?"
Of course, he could only keep those words to himself. He composed himself and placed the sketch on the coffee table.
"Valissa, you are a wonderful designer. Can you tell me where you learned your skills?"
Upon hearing this, Vera's smile widened even more. "Of course, but I only learned tailoring techniques from a teacher since I was a child. As for the designs, can I say that I figured them all out myself?"
"This is incredible! The design of this uniform is exactly what I had in mind!" Vilan exclaimed, pointing to the second sketch.
Vanesa was also taken aback. It turned out that the lord preferred the second design. She had thought that the other party would not accept such a strange design.
She smiled and looked behind her. "It was Igris who gave me the hint. She said you are an unconventional lord. You like innovative things, which is evident from your governance of Anvil Territory. You prefer simple and direct designs."
"However, I have to admit that this uniform is my personal preference. At least elsewhere, no one approves of this simple design. They prefer luxurious clothes that can show off their aristocratic style."
Vanesa spoke very frankly.
Vilan nodded, then took out a quill pen. "You don't mind if I add something to your sketch, do you?"
"Of course, please feel free to do as you please."
"Okay, you're right. What I value most is simplicity and efficiency. Fancy designs are meaningless to soldiers."
"So I think these decorative details can be removed, the cuffs can be replaced with button-fastened drawstrings, and a few more pockets should be added. My soldiers carry a lot of things, so we can't have too few pockets."
"By the way, this uniform is obviously more suitable for summer. It's not warm enough for winter. We need to design a fleece-lined version and a thick coat based on the original design."
"The belts need to be changed so that my soldiers can carry more weapons."
"And a training vest, which is an important component, should ideally absorb as much sweat as possible."
"As for the cloak, if we change all the clothes to olive green, we can save that expense."
"..."
Once Vilan started talking, he couldn't stop, but every suggestion he made made Valerie's eyes light up.
Gradually, Valerie became immersed in Vilan's designs, as he kept throwing out all sorts of imaginative ideas that surprised her.
Was he born into a design family?
Vanesa's attitude towards Vilan has changed. Before, she only thought of him as a lord with good learning ability, but now she regards Vilan as a kindred spirit.
After all, no one but Vilan could understand the strange design ideas in his head.
Not only her, but even Iglesias, who didn't understand design, slowly leaned closer and listened very attentively.
But what she was thinking about more was: Could such clothes really be made?
Before they knew it, more than half an hour had passed, and both Vilan and Veresa were hoarse from talking.
However, the results were quite fruitful. With Veresa's continuous improvements and reasoned arguments, the two quickly completed the second version of the design.
The changes in details are secondary; the main issue is that Vilan has completely deviated from the aesthetics of this era, turning the uniform into the combat hunting attire he remembers.
Even Igris noticed this.
"Lord Vilan, I don't understand... Even if these clothes are comfortable, without leather or plate armor, wouldn't the soldiers be completely defenseless?"
Vilan glanced at Igris in surprise; the girl's reaction was quick and her consideration was thorough.
He patiently explained, "My soldiers only need mobility; they're not going to be wielding knives and hacking people to pieces, nor can they."
Igris still didn't understand, but Vilan didn't say much. He couldn't very well tell Igris that he didn't have the money to buy so many suits of armor right now, could he?
That's armor! In ancient times, possessing a single suit of armor was punishable by beheading! What wealthy family could afford to support so many armored soldiers?
Instead of wasting gold coins and equipping a motley crew of soldiers, it's better to focus on mobility. After all, once he develops gunpowder, there won't be much difference between wearing armor and not wearing it.
Vanesa wasn't dwelling on the matter; her eyes were brighter than ever before.
"Mr. Vilan, you are the most design-savvy nobleman I have ever met! Were you ever a tailor?"
"No, not at all, just some basic ideas. But Veresa, your designs are truly amazing. I'm planning to start a design workshop; would you be willing to work for me?"
Vilan extended an olive branch, and Veresa accepted without hesitation.
She might have initially dismissed it, but after seeing Vilan's brilliant design concepts, she now wishes she could spend several more hours talking with him.
But despite her excitement, she still raised a very practical question.
"Mr. Vilan, even if I worked non-stop, it would be impossible to produce that many uniforms; it's beyond my capabilities."
Vilan nodded understandingly. "You just need to do the preliminary preparations and make samples. I'll take care of the rest. Good luck. I hope that after this winter, my guardsmen will be wearing this timeless uniform."
