Chapter 13 Meeting
Chapter 13 Meeting
A brief silence fell over the tent. Finally, Uncle Regler was the first to react and quickly chimed in, "Yes, yes, I've watched Gerns grow up. He's quite capable in every way."
"Yes, yes, Gerns's strength is quite good."
"They also have strong leadership skills; their squad has the lowest casualty rate in our battalion."
"This young man is quite good."
When they saw that even Holmes, who never participated in voting, had cast a vote in favor, these veteran soldiers immediately guessed the reason behind it. Those who had originally voted against changed their tune and began to praise Gerns.
It seems that Gerns has successfully gotten on the good side of young master Holmes.
Uncle Regeler looked at the scene before him and immediately understood, a feeling of relief welling up in his heart.
Not only Uncle Legler, but everyone present thought so, including Baron Keynes.
Baron Keynes glanced at his son with slight surprise. In the past, his son would never participate in this kind of vote. Was this Gerns really exceptional, or was there another reason?
Perhaps it's time to give them a proper warning or reminder?
Looking at his son beside him, Baron Keynes frowned slightly, seemingly lost in thought, and made up his mind.
After a series of unnecessary disturbances, the voting continued until the final result was determined.
Currently, Gerns has the most votes, with a total of five votes, which is a significant lead compared to Choms's three votes in second place.
Needless to say, Gerns successfully filled the vacant position of squadron leader due to a significant lead in votes.
"Now, I have another announcement to make. Due to the heavy losses in the previous battles, we need to transfer some new recruits and veterans from each squadron to the new Third Squadron. Gerns will serve as the deputy commander of the Third Squadron, and Choms will serve as the commander. As for the commanders and deputy commanders of the remaining squadrons, I will reorganize them and compile a list."
"Finally, regarding the recent goblin raid, I have instructed the scouts to scout out nearby goblin lairs and have allowed the newly formed Third Company to temporarily leave the ranks on the march to Luggs City to eradicate the goblin lairs. However, I require that they catch up with the main force before it arrives at Luggs City, or they will be treated as deserters."
After saying that, Baron Keynes glanced at young Master Holmes, then changed his tone and, in a voice almost devoid of emotion, instructed him: "From now on, you will lead the newly formed Third Company, and you will continue to serve as the cavalry vice-captain. Don't disappoint me too much."
"Yes, Father."
Young Master Holmes lowered his head slightly.
"Then, meeting adjourned. Reinald, you will be in charge of instructing the two newly promoted company commanders in martial arts. The meeting regarding the upcoming attack on Luggs Castle will be held tomorrow at noon."
As the baron stood up, he outlined the next steps of the plan.
"Yes, sir."
Apart from young Master Holmes, the others stood up and answered respectfully.
After the meeting, the company commanders and young master Holmes left the tent together, leaving only Baron Keynes and the old butler who had been behind him the whole time.
The guards filed in at the tent entrance, moved the conference table aside, and then respectfully withdrew. Two maids then gracefully entered, poured the baron a cup of tea, and bowed as they retreated.
Now that the Baron is getting on in years, he has grown increasingly fond of tea, a beverage that originated only from the East. Only by drinking tea can the Baron relax his tense mind.
Baron Keynes sipped his tea, his thoughts wandering elsewhere.
……
"One, two, stab!"
"Haven't you all eaten? Straighten your backs!"
"Keep your eyes focused forward, then chop!"
On the training grounds of the military camp, the sounds of squad leaders training their squads of soldiers could be heard everywhere.
At this moment, everyone was on edge. Even the troublemakers who were usually the most difficult to deal with were no longer being called out, because they knew that this matter concerned their leader's future. If anything went wrong at this time, they would be finished.
All eyes were drawn to the dark green military tent in the center of the camp. Finally, the tent opened, and several company commanders came out.
"Uncle, you're out now."
"Good morning, Company Commander."
After the company commanders came out of their tents, the soldiers of each company greeted them. However, seeing the company commanders' preoccupied expressions, they wisely returned to their positions after greeting them.
Knight Reinald was the last to emerge from his tent. He walked straight to a group of soldiers who were training and casually assigned one of them: "Go and call Gerns and Choms to the training ground behind the camp."
The soldier quickly understood what was happening, and ran off towards the direction of Gerns's team.
At this moment, Gerns was in his tent, chatting and boasting with his squad members.
The moment Gerns saw the summons officer arrive at his tent, he immediately realized that the officer was coming for him, and his heart jumped into his throat.
"Squad Leader Gerns, after discussion in the camp council, starting today, the Third and Fourth Squadrons will be reorganized into a new Third Squadron, and you are appointed as the deputy squadron leader of the new Third Squadron."
After saying that, the messenger smiled and patted Gerns on the shoulder heavily, saying, "Brother, not bad, you've actually been promoted to company commander. Don't forget about your brothers in the future!"
The moment Gerns received the message that he had been summoned by Knight Reinald, his first thought was that Uncle Regal had helped him, and that his recent allegiance to Young Master Holmes had probably had the same effect.
"Don't worry, that won't happen. We'll definitely have more opportunities to interact in the future."
Suppressing the excitement in his heart, Gerns exchanged a few pleasantries with the messenger and, amidst the ambiguous glances of his squad members, walked alone toward the training ground behind the camp.
The training ground behind the military camp and the training ground in front of the military camp are completely different things, because only people of the rank of company commander are qualified to train there.
Moreover, the area there is exceptionally large. According to Uncle Reger, the training ground there, used by only a dozen or so people, is almost the same size as the training ground used by a hundred soldiers.
Gerns arrived at the entrance to the training ground at the rear of the military camp and explained the situation to the soldiers guarding the gate.
The guards had clearly known the news beforehand, and since they were from the same battalion and somewhat familiar with each other, they made way for him: "Sir Reinald has been waiting inside for quite some time. Hurry up and go, don't keep him waiting."
After nodding slightly, Gerns walked straight into the training field.
"Hey young man, congratulations on your promotion to company commander. We'll be comrades now, so please take care of me."
Just as Gerns stepped into the training field, a familiar voice came from behind him.
Turning around and looking in the direction the sound came from, I saw Chomus walking towards me not far behind me.
Although Gerns and Choms weren't exactly acquainted, the memories left in his body told him that Choms had shared a few experiences with him on the battlefield, where they had each other shielded each other from harm.
"Don't try to be modest, buddy. You got promoted too, didn't you?"
"Alright, enough chit-chat, let's go inside quickly and not keep Knight Reinald waiting."
