Chapter 272: Protect the Future of the Tribe (2)
In those precious ten minutes, everyone moved as fast as they could. Calen carefully guided the children and elders out of the settlement through the back entrance.
Even though the settlement wasn’t too close to the forest, many trees still grew around the area. There were also deep ravines nearby, making it easy for them to hide, whether between the trees or inside the narrow gaps of the cliffs.
"They will bring more crystals here," Cyrus said with a darkened gaze. "How’s the barrier?"
Roxanna held a white crystal tightly in her hand. Little by little, the white color slowly turned blue.
"It’s almost ready," Roxanna replied. "It looks like Azul has already spread most of the crystals."
Just a while ago, Roxanna had also bought the fire-resistant barrier from the system, and it came in the form of white crystals.
It turned out that she had to spread the ten crystals around the edges of the settlement before she could finally activate the barrier.
"The rain is almost stopping," Cyrus muttered while looking up at the sky. The heavy rain had already started to weaken. "They’ll definitely throw more red crystals at the settlement soon."
Roxanna didn’t answer right away. Her eyes stayed fixed on the crystal in her hand as it finally turned completely blue.
"It’s time," she said quickly. "Activate the barrier."
[Fire-resistant Barrier Activated.] the system announced.
A moment later, bluish smoke slowly rose from the crystals spread around the settlement. The smoke drifted through the air and silently covered the entire place.
When the smoke completely disappeared, everything inside the settlement looked slightly shiny, as if a thin layer of clear resin had coated the surface.
But unfortunately, the barrier was more effective on non-living objects, while living creatures could not be covered by the transparent barrier.
"Watch out!" one of the warriors shouted as the large red crystals fell from the sky like meteors.
Cyrus immediately grabbed Roxanna and ran. The moment they moved, one of the red crystals crashed onto the exact spot where they had been standing just seconds earlier.
"They really want to hunt you down!" Roxanna said in shock.
Cyrus clicked his tongue in irritation because those bastards kept chasing him no matter where he went.
"Red! Where do you think you’re going?!"
The loud shout from behind made Cyrus freeze for a second, as if something heavy had slammed into the back of his head.
From afar, he saw a familiar figure standing among the burning red crystals and falling sparks. A man he wished he would never see again for the rest of his life.
Falcoln, the leader of the Sky Tribe.
Under the moonlight, his bald head almost looked shiny, reflecting the red glow from the exploding crystals around him.
"Don’t you miss me, Red?" Falcoln asked with a crooked grin, showing his messy teeth.
Roxanna frowned immediately. "Red? Why red?"
Cyrus lowered his voice slightly. "That’s my... slave name."
The moment she heard that, the anger inside Roxanna instantly flared up.
"His name is not Red!" Roxanna shouted loudly. Her glare was so sharp that if looks could kill, Falcoln would have dropped dead on the spot
"His name is Cyrus! Cyrus Vermilion!" she snapped angrily. "Don’t you dare change his name however you want!"
Instead of getting angry, Falcoln only smiled wider, as if Roxanna was nothing more than a small fox trying to bare her claws at him.
"Is she your wife?" he asked lazily. "Carla was right. Your wife is... interesting."
He gave a low whistle, clearly trying to tease her.
Cyrus immediately pulled Roxanna behind him and stepped in front of her, blocking Falcoln’s gaze.
"She has nothing to do with you," Cyrus said coldly. "Don’t you dare touch her with your dirty hands."
"Or what, Red?"
Falcoln’s smile slowly disappeared, replaced by a colder expression.
"What exactly are you going to do to me?" he asked mockingly. "You’re just a little bird. Your strength will never compare to ours."
At the same moment, the eagles flying above them let out loud screeches, as if they were laughing at Cyrus.
"If I truly mean nothing to you, then you wouldn’t chase me all the way here," Cyrus replied while narrowing his eyes. "What do you want from me, Falcoln?"
"The last time I checked, you were supposed to call me Leader or Master." Falcoln clicked his tongue in annoyance. "You haven’t even lived in the outside world for that long, yet you’ve already forgotten your place."
This time, Roxanna answered before Cyrus could speak. "He’s not your slave anymore, so you’re nothing to him!" she shouted back fiercely. "And why should he call you Leader? He’s one of my people now, which means I’m his leader!"
Falcoln stared at Roxanna for a few seconds before suddenly laughing.
The sound of his laughter echoed loudly across the battlefield, mixing with the screeches of the eagles above and the distant explosions of red crystals crashing into the settlement.
"What a fierce little fox," he mocked. "No wonder Red ran so far away for you."
Roxanna twitched the corner of her eyes. Cyrus hadn’t run to her on his own back then because Loba had practically dragged him by force all the way to the Vixeria Tribe.
On the other side, Cyrus’s expression immediately darkened. "Stop calling me that," he said coldly.
Falcoln ignored him completely. His sharp eyes remained fixed on Roxanna, slowly looking her up and down in a way that made Cyrus feel even more irritated.
"You know," Falcoln said casually, "I was actually curious about the female who managed to make one of my slaves betray the Sky Tribe."
"He didn’t betray anyone," Roxanna snapped back. "He just doesn’t want anything to do with the people who treated him like trash."
The smile on Falcoln’s face slowly faded. For the first time, the air around him felt truly dangerous.
"You speak very boldly for someone weaker than me," he said in a low voice.
Roxanna lifted her chin stubbornly. "And you speak too proudly for someone who steals freedom from others."
