Chapter 63 Protecting Against Evil Spirits
Chapter 63 Protecting Against Evil Spirits
Having lived two lives, Kane understands one thing.
Every person and organization has its own motives when doing anything.
The motives of the demonic cult couldn't be simpler.
To seize even greater power, they summon demons to descend upon the prime material plane, ultimately overthrowing the regimes of the six kingdoms and establishing an order dominated by them.
The necromancer Flynn's intention to take the possession potion was equally obvious.
By sacrificing a portion of their soul and limbs, one can alter their own aptitude and thus advance from apprentice to full-fledged mage.
Kane put down his quill and his thoughts began to wander.
That half-demonized corpse is most likely a frustrated apprentice or a low-level professional.
Where in this city are there the most people like this?
He stood up, walked to the second-floor window, and looked toward the Third District.
There stand towering mage towers, a place that countless disciples yearn for yet struggle to reach.
"Now, we await Shar's investigation results..."
……
After finalizing the plan, Kane immediately returned to the Night's Watch headquarters.
Reed spoke first once the team members had all arrived:
"The head of general affairs has already calculated the mission merits."
"Head of General Affairs?"
Kane looked at Reed.
Sienna immediately offered an explanation:
"He is the person in charge of assigning tasks to the various Night's Watch squads and calculating merits."
"Kane, what are your plans regarding the merits?"
Reed then explained:
"You can exchange them for gold coins or other resources, or you can accumulate them to a certain level and exchange them for housing."
Kane nodded.
"I plan to exchange for another first-level spell."
Reed frowned upon hearing this, his tone carrying a hint of seriousness:
"Kane, as a spellcaster, I must remind you that a good mage should know how to make choices."
"Don't bite off more than you can chew. Instead of constantly learning new spells, it's better to make the most of what you already have."
Choose what suits you better.
Kane nodded again, but there was no wavering in his eyes.
Seeing this, Reed could only sigh helplessly: "Fine."
He tossed me a certificate for pine wood.
"Take this and go to that library from last time."
Kane took the card, turned and left alone.
Sienna held her certificate of merit, watched his retreating figure, her lips moved, but in the end she said nothing.
……
We arrived once again in front of that magnificent domed building.
After undergoing layers of body searches, eye examinations, and handing over his weapons, Kane pushed open the familiar, heavy iron door.
Passing through two rows of bookshelves that reached the ceiling, he saw the white-bearded old mage Albrecht again.
The other person remained seated in the velvet high-backed chair, holding an ancient book that was not written in Nordic script, with a focused expression.
"Lord Albrecht"
Kane bowed respectfully and handed over the credentials.
"I have come to consult the spellbook and request entry into the first-circle spell zone."
Albrecht put away the receipt and glanced at him.
"Have you mastered the Cloud Mist Technique from last time?"
He did remember.
Kane replied, "Yes."
A barely perceptible look of amazement flashed in Albrecht's eyes, but he said nothing more.
At that moment, Kane raised his own question:
"Your Excellency, if my enemy were a demon or similar creature, how should I deal with it?"
Those children of demons, after undergoing the stigmata ritual, may very well gain some kind of demonic ability.
In order to deal with them, he prepared to master a targeted defensive spell.
Albrecht gave him a deep look, and after a long while, he slowly spoke:
"The sixth bookshelf, the third book in the third row."
After saying that, he lowered his head again and immersed himself in the book.
Kane bowed and thanked him.
At this moment, the bespectacled girl who had guided him last time walked over and, after listening, said softly:
Please come with me.
The two walked among the towering bookshelves and arrived once again at a secluded stone chamber deep within the library.
Standing in front of the protective bookshelf, as the girl put on special gloves to retrieve a book, she suddenly whispered:
"Lord Albrecht rarely instructs others to learn specific spells."
Does that mean... I'm special?
Kane thought to himself.
The girl had used her gloves to avoid the protective spells and gently took the book down.
Kane was then led to a private reading room.
Kane sat down, opened "Protection from Evil Spirits," and the words on the pages immediately caught his eye.
"Demons are evil otherworldly creatures from lower planes, encompassing many kinds such as demons and devils..."
"This spell creates a targeted defense through an ethereal barrier, providing a defensive boost, immunity to some fel energy corruption, and blocking direct contact and contamination by demons."
"The strength of the effect is positively correlated with the caster's willpower..."
Kane read silently, and his mind gradually became clear.
Demons in the abyss mostly possess the ability to bewitch people and create illusions.
For example, the succubus's allure over humans, the seductive spells of the bewitching demon, and the illusionary control of the demon-hunting spider...
If a demon child gained similar abilities through a stigmata ritual.
Being temporarily controlled without warning could expose one's immortality.
Time slips away, bit by bit.
When the gray icon for "Protect from Evil" lit up in the panel, Kane immediately invested 3 skill points.
The icon instantly changed from gray to bright, transforming into "Protection from Evil Spirits LV1".
A vast amount of magical knowledge and application techniques flooded into his mind like a tidal wave.
"Theoretically, we should find a place to test the effect, but it's still difficult to find any trace of the demon."
Kane closed the book, lost in thought.
"However, they should be looking for me too...it won't be long."
After the girl came to retrieve the books, Kane turned and left the library.
He walked along, examining the panel as he fell into thought.
"Unlocking a first-level spell requires 3 skill points, which makes it difficult to use."
"In contrast, melee basic skills only require 1 point, are used frequently, and are easier to level up."
"Shar will need time to find out about the missing people... Maybe I should find a teacher and learn scimitar skills systematically."
He thought of his nameless scimitar, sorted through the existing network of relationships in his mind, and soon came up with an idea.
It seems I still need to cultivate a better relationship with the city guards.
……
"Sir Kane, it is an honor to have you visit my home."
In the fourth district, the door of a three-story building was open.
The person who opened the door was an acquaintance of Kane's, Jasper Ashby, the captain of the city guard who had hunted down the giant carrion crawler with him.
Upon Kane's arrival, Jasper opened his arms and gave a Nordic hug, a gesture of friendship.
Kane hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward to respond.
Although he was not used to such close contact, adapting to local customs was a way of survival.
Fortunately, Jasper noticed his discomfort, gave him a light hug and then let go, warmly welcoming him into the house.
Kane was somewhat surprised when he entered.
The noble captain's home was very simple, not even as luxurious as the mansion of the merchant Ethan.
The furniture and furnishings all exude a utilitarian simplicity.
The two had been sitting on the pine chairs for a short while.
A young woman dressed in traditional Nordic clothing walked by carrying two cups of bitter root tea, accompanied by a little girl who was crying loudly.
The woman comforted the child while bowing to Kane, and the little girl, led by her mother, looked timidly at the unfamiliar visitor.
"This is my wife, Eleanor Ashby."
Jasper explained, pointing to the little girl.
"My daughter, Daisy Ashby."
Kane rose to return the greeting.
After introducing herself, Daisy broke free from her mother's hand and stared at him curiously.
Kane looked into the little girl's round eyes, smiled slightly, and had a thought.
The bitter root tea in the teacup on the table slowly rose, detached from the cup, and condensed in the air into a blooming flower.
"Spell!"
Daisy blinked in surprise and instinctively reached out to touch it.
But as soon as your fingertips touch the petals, the tea turns into tiny droplets and spreads out.
Her lips trembled, and she looked like she was about to cry, but the water droplets condensed again in the air.
It transformed into two neat Nordic characters: "Daisy".
The little girl immediately stopped crying and started laughing.
Kane smiled.
His water manipulation skills have reached LV10, making such tricks as easy for him as eating and drinking.
Jasper's expression was somewhat subtle:
"Lord Kane, cough... using noble magic to do such a thing, the mages of the Mage Tower might..."
"Spells are merely tools."
Kane teased Daisy by using water droplets to create the shape of a little rabbit, and said casually.
"Since it is a tool, it should be used to its fullest potential, rather than being bound by so-called 'nobility'."
Jasper gave a wry smile: "You're right."
But then he sighed softly:
"But magic... is ultimately a tool for killing."
Kane understood.
Jasper was reminded of the actions of the necromancer Flynn.
The necromancer's spells inflicted heavy casualties on the city guard's scout squadron, and the shadow of that tragedy will likely linger for some time.
After a moment, Jasper composed himself and got straight to the point:
"Lord Kane, you've come here today surely not for idle chatter, have you? Is there another unusual creature to hunt?"
Kane shook his head, pondered for a moment, and then stated his purpose:
"Captain Jasper, I want to learn scimitar techniques systematically."
"Do you or someone you know know who can guide me? I am willing to pay the appropriate fee."
Scimitar techniques differ from magic and are not strictly regulated.
The acquisition channels are also more extensive, and Kane is not worried about the cost.
The reason he sought out Jasper.
Firstly, because the two had fought side by side; secondly, because he knew that this noble captain was a generous and forthright person.
However, to his surprise, Jasper frowned upon hearing this.
She looked at him with a complicated expression and slowly said:
"I'm sorry, sir..."
Kane's expression turned strange as he listened to his story.
That reason is truly irresistible.
