Chapter 523: [Crimson Inheritance] (42)
[Did he run into a ghost?][I’m so scared. Somebody cover my eyes!!!]
[I’m terrified too. I guess I’ll just stare at my husband’s handsome face to calm myself down.]
[Is this really the time to be declaring your territory? I don’t want to argue at all.]
Silvanus looked at the ruins before him and let out a quiet sigh.
There was no other choice but to walk toward the girl.
He felt like a fish willingly swimming straight into a trap.
He tried to steady his breathing so he wouldn’t be too nervous, ignoring the deafening heartbeat pounding inside his chest. Even if his heart had leaped into his throat at that moment, he would have had to force it back down.
Stay calm, Silvanus thought expressionlessly.
At last, he stopped three meters away from the girl and spoke softly.
"Daisy, it’s already very late. Why are you still here?"
The trembling figure, shaking from her sobs, finally fell still.
Then Daisy suddenly turned around.
"It’s so dark... I can’t find my way back. I can’t find my way back..."
Blood streamed down her cheeks.
Her eye sockets were nothing but two bloody, empty holes. Crimson blood flowed over her face like tears. Her nose had been sliced completely flat, and blood poured directly into her mouth. Every movement of her lips exposed a scarlet oral cavity tangled with blood vessels.
Still crying, she suddenly planted both hands on the ground.
As she muttered to herself, all four of her limbs unnaturally stretched, and she began crawling toward Silvanus.
"I can’t see the way... Where are my eyes? Can you help me find my eyes?"
"If you can’t..."
...then give me your eyes instead.
But before Daisy could finish speaking, someone suddenly grabbed her hand.
Silvanus’s indifferent voice followed.
"Then let me take you back."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he pulled her forcefully up from the ground. The strength of the motion made Daisy’s body sway as though she were about to fall.
Silvanus immediately wrapped one arm around her waist to steady her.
Looking directly into the two blood-red, empty sockets on Daisy’s face, he said earnestly,
"Let’s go."
With that, he turned and began walking away, one hand firmly gripping Daisy’s wrist—so tightly that it was as if he feared she would disappear the moment he let his guard down.
An indescribable emotion appeared on Daisy’s face, terrifying as it was.
She tilted her head, and then her mouth suddenly stretched open. In an instant, it split all the way to the corners of her jaw, as if her skull had been cleaved in half.
But before anything else could happen, a chocolate bar was suddenly placed in her hand.
Then came Silvanus’s slightly muffled, cool voice.
"You’ve been crying all night. You must be tired. Have some chocolate to fill your stomach. It wouldn’t be good if your blood sugar dropped."
Daisy’s snake-like mouth, stretched impossibly wide, paused.
Tilting her head, she asked in a hoarse voice,
"Aren’t you afraid of me?"
"What are you talking about? You’re the one who should be afraid. If I decided to do something to you right now, no one would hear you scream."
His calm, emotionless voice sounded once more.
Daisy could not detect the slightest hint of malice in his words. It was as though the young man was simply giving a life lesson to a younger girl.
Of course that was the case.
Silvanus was practically reciting his "lines" with a numb mind. He deliberately kept every trace of emotion out of his voice because he was afraid Daisy would hear the fear he was desperately suppressing.
He hadn’t even turned around when handing her the chocolate.
His hands had simply coordinated on their own behind his back.
Please... please... why is this road so ridiculously long?! If I’d known, I never would’ve arranged to meet Nick in the middle of nowhere!
[From now on, I’ll never say Silvanus is just a pretty face again.]
[As expected of the Priest of an Evil God. He can stay this calm even when facing something like this!]
Silvanus: Walk faster. Faster. Faster!
His strides became so quick that he was almost running.
At last, the brilliant lights of the academy fell upon them.
After learning that Daisy lived in the women’s dormitory, Silvanus headed straight there without the slightest hesitation, hoping to send her off as quickly as possible.
"We’re here."
Silvanus came to a stop.
At the same time, Daisy’s somewhat absent-minded voice sounded.
"We’re here already..."
Anyone could hear the unmistakable disappointment in her voice.
Silvanus: "..."
Is she disappointed because she didn’t get the chance to kill me?
Sooner or later, he would have to face her.
Silvanus took a deep breath before turning around.
But the moment he saw Daisy again, he froze.
She no longer looked like the grotesque creature that was neither ghost nor human from before.
Her skin had returned to normal, a soft rosy white.
Her dress was no longer an unnaturally pure white. Or perhaps it had always been white, but now it was stained with dirt and mud.
Her jet-black hair fell in smooth, flowing strands, though it was now slightly disheveled. Her eyes, the same deep black, were as beautiful as black pearls from the sea.
Even with her pale lips and bedraggled appearance, she could not hide her extraordinarily striking beauty.
She was exquisite, like a priceless diamond.
Only now, that diamond had been covered in dust.
As if sensing Silvanus’s gaze, Daisy bit her lip and turned her face away. Her slightly messy bangs fell over her forehead, concealing the delicate features of her beautiful face.
It was always like this.
People would stare at her...
Then they would come to despise her, as though she were the most horrifying creature in the world.
This boy... perhaps I should kill him... before he becomes just like everyone else?
Daisy didn’t even understand why such a thought had crossed her mind.
Besides... how could she possibly kill anyone?
Just then, her bangs were gently brushed aside.
Silvanus’s large hand softly smoothed her hair. As his fingers ran through it, Daisy’s unruly bangs settled into place, as though the turmoil in her heart had been calmed along with them.
She looked up at him in surprise.
His expression was solemn. His movements were slightly awkward, yet unbelievably gentle.
Silvanus removed the hairpin from his own hair and fastened Daisy’s stubborn bangs in place.
The lily-shaped hairpin rested just above her ear, complementing her temperament perfectly.
Looking at Daisy, he pressed his lips together.
In the end, all he said was,
"Go back. Don’t come outside alone at night again. I should get going too. Goodbye."
Without giving Daisy a chance to respond, he turned and walked away.
He knew perfectly well that Daisy could kill him.
Yet seeing her like this, he simply couldn’t stop himself from softening.
He knew that Daisy’s fate had already been decided.
Even so, he couldn’t help feeling dissatisfied with it.
But he wasn’t omnipotent.
He couldn’t change everything.
