Chapter 351: Two Intermediates
Veridia Base was currently short on weapons, so the primary means of killing zombies were Superpowers.
Although Mordecai Quinn’s arrival had given the team a good start, casualties quickly began to mount.
"These zombies are too ferocious!"
"The Mutated Zombies have evolved again! Be careful!"
As an Earth Element Superpower User, Daniel Lewis immediately conjured a Stone Shield to block for a Defense Soldier, but the shield was shattered by a single punch from an Alloyed Zombie!
Watching a Defense Soldier get his head grabbed by a zombie and lifted high into the air, Daniel Lewis screamed and conjured several Stone Spikes.
Although the Alloyed Zombie was killed, their comrade inevitably began to turn into a zombie soon after.
With more and more Mutated Zombies swarming the area, everyone had to push down their grief and fury and immediately throw themselves into the next kill.
ROAR!
A violent roar accompanied the shaking of the ground.
Mordecai Quinn looked in that direction and saw a tall Mutated Zombie, completely covered in Stone Armor, running rapidly toward them.
"Gunners, full firepower!
Everyone, on defense! It’s that Intermediate Zombie!"
Mordecai Quinn shouted.
The last time he saw this Intermediate Earth Element Zombie, it was tall, but it wasn’t yet covered in hard stone.
It was even tougher to deal with now!
"Yes!"
Some voices trembled, but they still readied themselves to fight.
After all, the last time this Earth Element Zombie appeared, their party of 300 had been almost completely wiped out.
The sounds of weapons firing rose and fell in waves.
Whether it was sniper rifles or massive rocket launchers, they all did very limited damage to the Intermediate Zombie.
ROAR!
After being struck by two rockets powerful enough to blast deep craters in the ground, the Intermediate Earth Element Zombie stopped in its tracks.
"Why did it stop?" someone said.
’Did our attacks actually work?’
"Don’t let your guard down."
Mordecai Quinn had a bad feeling about this.
And sure enough, after a low growl, dozens of sharp Stone Spikes shot toward the group!
Along with the Stone Spikes, the Earth Element Zombie picked up its pace!
"Get out of the way!"
Mordecai Quinn yelled at the gunners.
Its target was them!
Their previous attacks had pissed it off!
Besides this Intermediate Zombie, a ceaseless tide of other zombies was surging toward them.
Just dealing with what was in front of them was already pushing everyone to their limit.
"Y-Yes!"
A weapons operator shouldered his rocket launcher and started scrambling backward.
But a Stone Spike hit him in the thigh.
’It’s over.’
He couldn’t bring himself to abandon one of the base’s few remaining rocket launchers, but he also knew he was a dead man.
His wound was still bleeding, and the Intermediate Zombie quickly noticed him.
He tried to crawl backward, still carrying the weapon on his back.
But a shadow still fell over him from behind.
Mordecai Quinn, who had just lopped the heads off several zombies in a row, saw the situation and rushed over.
ROAR!
The Intermediate Zombie stretched out its sharp claws, swiping at the man on the ground.
"No!"
As Mordecai Quinn screamed, the weapons operator’s eyes widened in terror.
An almost transparent sand shield had appeared in front of him.
It blocked the Intermediate Zombie’s claws.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The Intermediate Zombie hammered the sand shield again and again with its petrified fists.
But the shield didn’t even budge.
"That’s..."
Mordecai Quinn whipped his head around and saw a slender figure leaping high from mid-air.
THUD!
Wielding her Fire Roaring Blade, Nina Jacobs seized the opportunity and lopped off one of the Intermediate Earth Element Zombie’s hands.
ROAR!
The Earth Element Zombie staggered back several steps.
Nina Jacobs quickly scanned the battlefield. No wonder the surrounding zombies were all converging here.
’The stench of blood is too strong.’
"Look out! It’s dangerous!"
Mordecai Quinn didn’t know how Nina Jacobs had done it, but the Intermediate Zombie was already pouncing on her!
"I don’t need backup! Wayne, go help them!"
As soon as Nina Jacobs spoke, Wayne Warner’s Strength Element Superpower surged around him.
In just two punches, he shattered the skulls of two zombies and saved a team member who had been wounded by a Stone Spike.
Meanwhile, Nina Jacobs left the onlookers even more stunned. After a few lightning-fast strikes, she had actually forced the Earth Element Zombie to retreat again and again!
"Quick, get the wounded to the vehicles."
Daniel Lewis shouted hastily.
At the same time, he stared at the two newcomers in shock.
’Are these the two who saved Mordecai Quinn?’
He had even mistakenly assumed that Nina Jacobs would use this debt of gratitude to stay at the base and secure a place by Mordecai Quinn’s side.
But he never expected her to be a Dual Element Superpower User!
"Your defense is pretty solid."
Watching sparks fly from the Intermediate Earth Element Zombie where her blade struck, Nina Jacobs decided to break its defenses first.
Several Stone Spikes shot toward her.
Nina Jacobs conjured a Diamond Sand Cover, then immediately took control using her Earth Element Superpower.
The Stone Armor on the zombie began to peel away, piece by piece.
Immediately after, the Diamond Sand Cover dissipated, reforming into a long Diamond Sand Spike. A Fire Serpent fused with the spike, and the combination shot toward the now-defenseless Intermediate Zombie!
The Intermediate Zombie’s Superpower manifested just as quickly; it swiftly conjured a Stone Shield to block.
"So close."
Oswin Marshall couldn’t help but slap his thigh. It had almost been a direct hit.
To his surprise, however, the thick Stone Shield conjured by the Intermediate Zombie was shattered to pieces!
The Diamond Sand Spike broke through the Stone Shield and continued straight toward the Intermediate Zombie!
The spike pierced the Intermediate Zombie’s shoulder, carrying it backward until it was pinned firmly to the ground.
Seeing the zombie try to struggle free, Nina Jacobs controlled the Fire Serpent on the Diamond Sand Spike and made it wrap around the creature.
Her Fire Element Superpower flared, and the Intermediate Zombie was instantly engulfed in flames!
Watching the "human torch" struggling on the ground, Mordecai Quinn’s expression shifted from shock to delighted surprise as he looked at Nina Jacobs.
He knew she was strong, but he never imagined she was an Intermediate Dual Element Superpower User.
Furthermore, her power was far beyond that of this Intermediate Earth Element Zombie.
It was a complete domination.
"Don’t get careless. It’s dangerous here. Find someone to treat the wounded first,"
Nina Jacobs said, all while controlling the Flaming Arrows materializing in mid-air.
"Right!"
Mordecai Quinn knew this wasn’t the time for conversation.
With the arrival of Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner, the battle quickly stabilized.
WHAM!
Wayne Warner was now channeling his power into his palms, sending a group of surrounding zombies flying with a single strike.
"Could it be... he’s also an Intermediate Superpower User?!"
Mordecai Quinn asked.
’That level of power... It’s not something I could hope to achieve at my current stage.’
"Yes, he just advanced a little while ago."
Nina Jacobs replied.
"No wonder."
The realization dawned on Mordecai Quinn.
The others around them had recovered by now and were even starting to show signs of overpowering the zombies in front of them.
But just then, Nina Jacobs frowned.
When she first arrived, she had sent her Little Zombie Rat ahead to scout. Now, the Little Zombie Rat had spotted a massive, deep pit.
The pit was already filled with zombies.
The zombies at the bottom were clamoring, climbing their way out.
Although the rat’s perspective was limited, Nina Jacobs could still sense the sheer number of zombies there and the severity of the situation.
"I suggest we retreat three kilometers,"
Nina Jacobs said.
"Alright."
Mordecai Quinn didn’t hesitate in the slightest, nor did he plan to ask why. He immediately began organizing the vehicles at the rear to pull back.
"Did you find something?"
Daniel Lewis came over and asked.
"Not a discovery, a suspicion. If we keep advancing and something unexpected happens, we’ll be caught off guard."
Nina Jacobs replied earnestly.
"True. This is the first time we’ve encountered a situation like this. There were never this many zombies here before."
Daniel Lewis no longer lingered in the fight either, quickly leading his men to the vehicles.
"By the way, who is Sean Joyce?"
It only occurred to Nina Jacobs partway through that she had forgotten to ask Zachary Ziegler about him.
She remembered Zachary Ziegler saying that this Sean Joyce was the one who had destroyed the road here.
